Position Summary*
The incumbent, reports to the Systems Coordinator, under
Senior Director of network operations, serves as the expert-level hands-on
support analyst for enterprise UNIX/Linux systems, distributed systems,
middleware infrastructure, application interface development, and communication
interfaces related to enterprise applications.
Minimum Qualifications*
Education/Work Experience: Bachelor¿s degree in Computer
Science, Engineering or related technical field; minimum seven years in
computer/technology-related fields with progressively increasing
responsibilities; minimum five year¿s experiences in systems administration in
an enterprise Unix and/or Linux environment (with 100+ managed systems); minimum
of three years experiences with system and application design and
implementation; minimum three years in implementation and support of production
database, Web, systems and networking applications.
Knowledge: internal
operating system technology; knowledge of computer operations and hardware, and
network communications theory; applications programming techniques and
procedures; knowledge of network operating system and network architecture,
configuration, and protocols; client server technologies.
Specialized
Knowledge: current computer operating systems and system technology
Specialized Skills: effective interpersonal and communication skills;
effective written skills; proficient in advanced Linux/UNIX shell or Perl
scripting.
Abilities: use operating system languages as defined by the
campus and ability to perform systems level programing in a distributed,
networked environment; use performance monitoring software and interpret
results; perform preventative and remedial maintenance to operating system;
interface/integrate campus defined operating systems with software and other
systems; evaluate existing and proposed systems and recommend upgrades and/or
research and survey new products and/or releases, such as productivity tools;
establish and document operations procedures modifications analyze and resolve
multi-faceted technology problems.
Preferred Qualifications
Possess a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Certification preferred.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field
and 5+ years of experience from an enterprise-wide academic support environment
with the following:
Broad knowledge of computer technology to
support wide range of computing projects
Thorough understanding of
technology including but not limited to IP, web, encryption and authentication
Excellent knowledge of system, network and communications security
Working knowledge with SSL, VPN, firewall, IDS, PKI, NAT, SSH and other network
security tools and protocols
Familiar with CGI and middleware technology
Thorough understanding of computer hardware and software technology and
able to provide interface and communication solutions
Familiar with
Oracle database, clustering technologies, network configuration, and performance
tuning
Excellent knowledge of up-to-date versions of Linux operating
system, able to perform UNIX/Linux system diagnostics and performance tuning and
able to write UNIX shell or PERL scripts
Familiar with Microsoft Windows
server and server administration
Working knowledge providing VMware and
cluster systems administration and support
Understanding of system and
networking protocols and topologies including but not limited to TCP/IP, LDAP,
SAN, NAS, and ISCSI
Ability to work independently
Demonstrated
problem-solving skills
Experience in UNIX application development
Solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts;
can configure NFS and NIS, Samba/SMB, LDAP; can use nslookup or dig to check
information in the DNS; understands network routing/VLAN concepts/best practices
